Nationwide data breach could cost millions to resolve

Feb 20, 2021 Blog

A good antivirus software could detect a threat and save businesses from falling victim to ransomware

Kia experienced a nationwide outage that affected not only its mobile UVO Link apps, but their phone services, and internal sites used by dealerships too. Millions of Americans have been affected by the company’s server data breach, which could cost the company a boat load of money.

The ransomware hackers have offered to give the company the encrypted data, as well as promised not to leak the stolen data. If the company refuses to pay $20 million, they threatened to release sensitive data.

Companies that hold personal data are most vulnerable to ransomware attacks. It’s highly recommended they have a top-rated antivirus software like Webroot, which received a perfect score for protection from malware and phishing, according to a review on PCmag.com.

Ways to prevent a security breach

  • Have the latest security patches
  • Subscribe to good antivirus software
  • Have up to date firewalls with active security services

A firewall with advanced security services blocks the links and attachments from getting through the network. It essentially helps alleviate human error. Human error is the number one cause of these types of infections.

Training users on what to look out for is the best weapon in combating hackers.

Things to watch out for

  • Suspicious attachments
  • Phishing emails asking to provide credentials
  • Personal platforms asking for credentials via corporate emails
  • Be aware of the name of your antivirus provider. (Viruses often disguise themselves as fake antivirus software).
